Problem
Clinicians and analysts needed to find signals in large volumes of clinical and operational health data surveillance patterns, anomalies, reporting obligations. The existing path meant manual exploration across dense datasets, slow enough that some questions simply weren't asked.

Approach
Skowak designed health-data analysis, reporting, and decision-support interfaces that surfaced patterns without requiring the user to know what to query for. The central design problem was calibrating how much the system should assert versus how much it should show too much automation in a clinical context destroys the trust the tool depends on.

What made it work
In a clinical setting the question isn't "can the system decide?" but "how does the system show its work so a professional can accept or reject it?" That's the human-in-the-loop design problem at the centre of most serious applied-AI work today Skowak was solving it a decade before the current wave.
